What is Personalized Surgical Care?

It is where physicians and patients use the values, preferences, and goals of a patient to work TOGETHER and make healthcare decisions

Our Goal

There is a need for creative ways help personalize the decisions surrounding surgery for patients. Shared decision making is a recommended approach to personalize decisions, and patient decision aids (PtDA) can help in this process. It allows healthcare workers and patients to work together to come to decisions regarding the care of the patient. However, little research has investigated shared decision making in surgical care.

This project is exploring the concept of shared decision making in surgical care specifically. Shared decision making has been shown to improve patient understanding, satisfaction, trust, as well as adherence and health behaviors. It has also been shown to improve symptoms and quality of life.

It is our goal to bring shared decision making to the field of surgery
